Our Blog

Welcome to Amityville Apothecary!

Owners

We’re so excited you’re here! Seriously! The past few weeks have been such a labor of love. We’ve put so much of our individual time and spirit into the shoppe- literally head-down in production mode- that we didn’t even have time to get a website going right away! But here it is- isn’t she beautiful?

We wanted to take a little bit of time to introduce ourselves and why we created this space.

Recently coming into our own spiritual awakening over the past two years, Dina and

Danielle  wanted to create a space of no judgement. Because let’s face it- there is so much to learn, and people will spend lifetimes becoming experts on any one modality, let alone a few!

Often we’ve walked into a shop and felt intimidated. Embarking upon spirituality is sensitive. There are emotions that need to be processed; oftentimes old wounds come up (at least they have for us). The term “safe space’ is sort of everywhere right now- but that’s exactly what we wanted to create.

Our space is filled with carefully curated products (literally all hand picked by either Dina or Danielle). Monthly we feature a roster of guest lecturers that are here to guide you in your spiritual quest. If you need a little more support, our healers are here for you with a selection of modalities to soothe your mind, body and soul.

We’re here for you, and we see you - no matter where you are in your spiritual journey- we’re so excited you’re here- and we can’t wait to meet you!

Ritual: bringing the magical into everyday life

Ritual. We get it; the word can trigger some or bring memories to others. How can we harness ritual to bring the magical into our every day life? Further.. why do we even WANT to do that?

Human Beings are ritualistic.

Here’s a funny anecdote: My son (who has Autism) went to the Jets/Giants game yesterday with his Dad. Even though I wasn’t there, I wanted to listen to the game (on the radio- how 3d) to know what was going on; I figured we could chat about it when he got home. Well, imagine my surprise when a radio advert came on discussing how Bigelow Tea was a former player’s “game day ritual”!!

Ritual! It’s all over sports. Watch baseball and you’ll see batters- when at bat- performing the same motions and activities Every. Single. Time. Adjusting gloves, grip, their feet at the plate… pay attention and you’ll see it!

Now, we can’t get into the head of every batter; some may just- on the surface- think what they are doing “brings them luck”. But I bet others undertake the same motions time and time again to get them “in the zone”. In the place where they perform better, where time changes, and where they can make something happen.

That, my friends, is magic and ritual.

Ritual is for everyone and it is in everything (so is magic.. by the way). Ritual is the blowing out of birthday candles, the way we set our table at big meals like Thanksgiving, the honoring of service members on Veteran’s Day at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Ritual gives our lives, our actions, our thoughts and our prayers more meaning and centers us in our busy lives.

You can make your own Ritual- you have permission!

So, how to bring the magical into your every day life? Start with an affirmation or mantra in the morning; journal/free write; ritualize your shower (that’s big for us at the Apothecary- sometimes you only have those 10 minutes- so make them count). Use scent; a drop of Frankincense in your moisturizer every morning is great for your skin- but it’s also a wonderful Ritual to bring yourself into the present moment and into gratitude.

Ritual in the Liminal Space.

Hold Up- what’s Liminal Space anyway? By definition: it is the “middle stage” in a right of passage; you’re not who you were.. but you’re not who you want to become, either. Thinking about this- our entire life is sorta of Liminal, isn’t it? We live this human experience to give growth to our souls; not who we were at birth, but not who we will fully be as we transition out of our current human experience, either.

Wait- why did I being Liminal Space into the mix, anyway? Well, because by creating ritual we are bringing importance to and anchoring ourselves in the growth we want to call in. Whether connected to any of the “big three” (abundance, love, protection) or any other state- we use ritual to amplify.

Don’t know where to start? Don’t worry- we got you, boo.

Feeling a little overwhelmed? Don’t worry- we got you. Deborah Globus (La Padre) is leading a class on ritual at the shop (click here for deets). Or- feel free to connect with us for one-on-one conversation and coaching, Either way- we’re here for you and cannot wait to hear all about your rituals (past, present and future).

Surviving Mercury Retrograde

Everyone wants to know- how do you go about surviving Mercury Retrograde?

The final mercury retrograde of this year- and this decade- begins on October 31st- how do you go about surviving Mercury Retrograde? When most people hear Mercury Retrograde is coming back around they’re filled with dread and apprehension.

At the shop we hear many tales of communication mishaps and technology blunders- heck, we experience them ourselves too!

And while Mercury Retrograde can be extremely annoying- it does force us to do something really important:

SLOW DOWN.

Twenty First Century Life is break-neck. How many of us are shuffling multiple smart devices and a to-do list that is rolled up like toilet paper? I know we’re guilty of it at the Apothecary, too.

In waltzes Mercury Retrograde on October 31st right at the same time as Samhain- the last harvest of the year- to beg us to slow down.. to take stock of our year.. and breathe.

What’s Samhain?

Samhain (pronounced sah-win) marks the turn of the Great Wheel of Time towards darkness and the beginning of a new spiritual year. Samhain calls us to look at the work of the prior year; we tended our inner world- our realm of emotions; we planted seeds fo r what we wanted; we did the hard work and heavy lifting; and finally we harvested our rewards.

Taking Stock of the year.

Some of what we planned for the year didn’t come to pass; maybe we had high hopes but what we wished and hoped for wasn’t in the cards for us. So, maybe this Samhain there is celebration for what did happen and mourning for what didn’t. That is totally okay- give yourself space to feel all the feels.

Go within, and sweet the inner corners of your ego…

As we turn to darkness once again- perfectly timed with Mercury Retrograde- the message is: go within and sweep the inner corners of your ego, your consciousness, and your subconscious. The great work of this lifetime is shining light into the inner recesses and integrating the lessons you learn there.

What are your trigger traps?

And.. if Mercury Retrograde triggers you with mishaps and miscommunications- pay attention and learn; Mercury Retrograde can be a great teacher if we stay calm and pay attention of what is triggering us and why.

There’s usually great clues in our triggers: what we need to work on, what needs to be addressed, and where past pain needs to be integrated- they are in our triggers.

Get those journals out!

Perhaps keep a special Retrograde Journal this go around- it’s an excellent opportunity to integrate some tough lessons the last few weeks of 2019 and this decade. (If you’re local perhaps you can join us at one of our journal groups- November 14th and December 12th)

In the meantime, we put together a collection of crystals to make this cycle a little easier which is available for purchase online or in store.

Crystals for Surviving Mercury Retrograde
Crystals for Surviving Mercury Retrograde

Hematite:

Incredibly grounding, rely on Hematite to anchor you to the Earth (hold hematite in your hand and feel its weight) and pull any negativity away from you and towards the Earth’s core.

Golden Sheen Obsidian

Traditional obsidian is a wonderful stone for scrying- peering with relaxed gaze into a stone or crystal and allowing images to come up through the subconscious. Golden Sheen Obsidian has a beautiful shimmer to it; reminding us to always look for light in the darkness (or joy in sadness).

Blue Lace Agate

Blue Lace Agate is a soothing stone that aids in easing communication, allowing you to speak your truth from the heart.

Chrysocolla

Just looking at chrysocolla you think water and coolness; for the heart it helps ease heartache, imparts strength and balance and increases the capacity to love. For the throat it balances expression and helps us understand that sometimes silence is golden.

Selenite

Selenite is a high vibration crystal that is cleansing, clearing, and protective. This crystal provides clarity, and as such is especially useful during Retrograde and the darker half of the year.

Botswana Agate

Botswana Agate is the bear hug of the crystals included in this selection; it helps overcome depression, it alleviates obsessive mental thoughts and destructive though patterns. Work with Botswana Agate to stabilize your energy when the outside world is helter-skelter.

HOW TO WORK WITH YOUR CRYSTALS?

Carry them on you in the provided pouch, place them on your desk or other area of work/production. Place the pouch under your pillow, meditate with your crystals! By keeping the crystals near your physical body, you are allowing their frequency to elevate your own!

If you need additional help with keeping calm this retrograde- perhaps you would benefit from a reiki or crystal healing session? Learn more about our sessions by following this link or by calling us at 631.464.4589.

Relax – working with crystals to de-stress

RELAX

Twenty first century life is hectic but we can work with crystals to relax and de-stress. We are all go-go-go and on a 24 hour news cycle. We need to relax and de-stress!

These days, it seems like the world is in chaos and we have so much on our shoulders. We’re forced to live (and produce) in a world that gives little regard to the cycles of nature. Stress is scary, and can have many physical effects; just check out this article by Web-MD!

Make no mistake, our bodies do not do well ignoring nature and its rhythms. We close our eyes (and hearts) to the cycle of rest, stillness, growth, and blooming that is evident around us.

Alas, we are 21st century humans with 21st century responsibilities.

The relax crystal kit was designed to help us relax, de-stress, slow down and calm the anxiety that creeps up at times.

Crystals to Relax and De-Stress:

Lepidolite

Lepidolite is a mica stone with lithium in it. Yup- the same lithium that doctors prescribe is in Lepidolite! Work with Lepidolite to calm worry, obsessive and compulsive thoughts, and anxiety. We like to lay Lepidolite on our foreheads (over third-eye) at the end of a long day while taking deep, cleaning breaths.

Howlite

Howlite is a beautiful stone of ascension and peace. Work with howlite to reduce stress, anxiety, tension and to dispel rage. Sleep with howlite to reduce insomnia and ensure a calm, restful sleep.

Peacock Ore

Known as the stone of happiness, we like to work with Peacock Ore to remind us to look for rainbows after rain. Peacock Ore stimulates creativity and blessings. Sometimes we need a change of perspective- work with Peacock Ore to remember that- just like it has many colors- or lives do, too!

Scolecite

Scolecite is a stone of transformation, spiritual awakening, and peace. Work with scolecite to restore balance and peace in your life, and to regain control your happiness. Scolecite is a wonderful stone to sleep with (under the pillow) as an aid to restful sleep.

Garnet

A stone of the root chakra, Garnet is a stone of safety. Beckoning with a whisper of: it is alright- you are safe, secure and held by mother Earth, we included Garnet because sometimes we need to escape the mechanizations of our head and drop into a feeling of safety. Work with garnet to realize that joy, happiness, and security is your birthright.

Dream Amethyst

Dream (or chevron) Amethyst is a beautiful combination of amethyst and white quartz. Amethyst is a member of the quartz family and therefore a master healer. While Amethyst raises vibration, it s also a stone of peace, protection, and connection to Source.

HOW TO WORK WITH YOUR CRYSTALS TO RELAX AND DE-STRESS?

Carry them on you in the provided pouch, place them on your desk or other area of work/production. Place the pouch under your pillow, meditate with your crystals! By keeping the crystals near your physical body, you are allowing their frequency to work with your own, helping you relax and de-stress.

If you need additional help with relaxation, perhaps you would benefit from our coaching program, a reiki session or restorative yoga. We’d love to discuss your life with you- and help you develop a plan of rest and relaxation.

Manifest: what you seek is seeking you!

MANIFEST

How do I Manifest my desires? That’s a question many ask us when visiting the Apothecary. In short- what you seek is seeking you! When a desire pops into your head, the energy of that desire is created into the world.

From this point, you need to align your own energetic frequency with the energy of that which you seek. Only when the energies match in frequency will you come together with your desires.

Crystals are just one way to entrain your energy (a fancy word for match energy) with that which you desire.

Crystals have their own energetic frequency, and as this energy is ordered and constant (due to the very ordered nature of a crystal’s molecular structure) a crystal can help “order” our own very chaotic frequency.

Our ‘manifest’ collection features a collection of crystals intended to hold the vibration of your desire, as well as raise your own energetic frequency.

Manifestation Crystals:

Pyrite

Pyrite, also known as fool’s gold, is the symbol of wealth and success in the crystal kingdom. It’s an excellent stone to place in the “wealth” corner of your home or workplace (south east). Evoking the energy of the sun at high noon, pyrite will infuse you will energy and motivation to work toward your intended desire.

Pyrite will also boost your self-confidence, aiding in an “inner knowing” that you can succeed in what ever you set your mind (and soul) to.

Citrine

Citrine, a member of the quartz family of crystals, is a master healer stone that raises vibration. Citrine gets its name from the French word Citron, for lemon- and like its namesake, it imbues any environment with positivity and joy. Think about how you feel when you smell lemon- Citrine does the same thing.

When manifesting it is key to get into the attitude of gratitude- allow Citrine to connect you to joyful energy.

Green Aventurine

The “fertilizer” of the crystal kingdom! Green Aventurine is literally the color of shamrocks and money! Work with green aventurine to “grow” that which you are looking to manifest! Allow green aventurine to invite in wealth and abundance while clearing you of negativity and doubt!

Tiger Eye

Sometimes when you are manifesting something really BIG you need to be BRAVE, right? Tiger Eye is a stone of courage, personal strength, and good luck. Oftentimes fear is the biggest stumbling block to our success in manifesting. We know we WANT something – but sometimes the work to get there is scary. Rely on on Tiger Eye to help you be BRAVE!

Orchid Calcite

Ge those creative juices flowing! Orchid Calcite is a dreamy combo of orange calcite and black tourmaline. Orange Calcite brings movement and flow to the sacral chakra; activating creativity, sexuality and passion. To manifest anything- we need to match its energetic frequency- and to match that frequency we need to be PASSIONATE about that think we are calling to us!

Orchid Calcite will give our passion a boost, and GROUND that passion- by way of the black tourmaline- into our root. Grounding is important because in order to create ANYTHING you need to be grounded into the physical world!

If you need additional help with manifestation work- perhaps you would benefit from our coaching program? We’d love to discuss your goals with you- and help you develop a plan to get there!

If you want to get more into the energy-side of manifesting, check out the great work being done by Gabrielle Bernstein! She’s a fav of ours!

Green Cleaning with Essential Oils for Summer

As the Summer season approaches many of the gorgeous herbs we find in our garden have also been distilled into essential oils enabling us to use the herb in a whole new, green cleaning, way..

From refreshing to relaxation here are a few green cleaning recipes to enjoy this Summer Season.

Lemongrass [Cymbopogon citratus]

lemongrass is excellent for tired muscles

Lemongrass is an intoxicating essential oil that has many purposes. First it’s an excellent household cleaner. It’s also great for musculoskeletal aches and pains so after a long day in the garden add 4 drops to a tablespoon of carrier oil (coconut or olive oil would work well) and rub into your tired muscles.

Lemongrass has also been known to aid the immune and central nervous system so I simple whiff of the bottle that has an orifice reducer can often ease a nervous mind. One of the oldest grasses used for ayurvedic food and ceremony for thousands of years.

A good antifungal and helpful for headaches, Lemongrasses best secret is released when it is blended with other essential oils to create a powerful bug spray.

Pair with Peppermint, Lavender, Patchouli, or Geranium for a safe and effective insect repellent.  One caution is it may cause irritation on sensitive skin. Always dilute and conduct a patch test before applying.

Sweet Orange [Citrus sinensis]

Gentle and powerful is a perfect description of Sweet Orange.  Useful for many ailments, Orange has antibacterial qualities but is also known to be calming and soothing.  It’s an excellent choice for respiratory support, clearing infections, and has impressive effects in supporting digestion.

With a citrusy, bright and fresh aroma, Sweet Orange is often used in natural cleaning products as it is an air purifier–great for a room refreshing spray. Blend with Lavender and Geranium for a soothing scent to ease tension and alleviate exhaustion. Sweet Orange can be skin sensitizing so be careful with direct contact to the skin. In the rare case of skin discomfort use a vegetable oil (olive, coconut, sunflower etc.) on the area and to remove the essential oil.

Sweet Basil  {Ocimum basilicum]

Known as ‘Sweet’ Basil  this essential oils gem is herbaceous and a little spicy. Helpful for headaches, plus muscle and inflammation it’s a favorite on an Aromatherapists’ short list. This antibacterial, antiseptic, and even a little sedative essential oil has a long history and was once one of the most commonly found herbs in any medicinal kit. Sweet Basil  is often described as warm, green, spicy, herbaceous. Blend with rosemary, laurel, and peppermint with a lively and herbaceous blend.

If you are interested in learning more about blending, I am teaching an upcoming class on Introduction to Blending with Essential Oils Saturday, June 22 from 2pm to 4pm at the Amityville Apothecary. Developing Intuitive Gifts

One of the advantages of developing your intuitive gifts (psychic & mediumistic) is that you learn how to recognize messages and signs you are already receiving but may not realize.

Name that tune?

A common way our loved ones in Spirit reach out to us is by sending us a song. All of a sudden we have a song repeating in our mind. People often comment they have a particular song stuck in their head but many do not realize that it could be the very answer they have been seeking.

The song may be one you would connect to a loved one and it is their calling card to let you know they are around. Songs are more effective sometimes because we routinely dismiss random thoughts popping through our mind but will allow and focus upon a song.

For example, on more than one occasion my father has sent the song, “My funny Valentine” to my medium friends who I am with. His name is Valentine.

Let it be?

Alternatively the song could be an answer to a question or a decision you need to make. I often receive the Beatles song, “Let it be” when I have sought guidance about whether to take a particular action. When I receive this song, it is an answer to hold off at this time.

There are many other ways the Spirit world can send messages or use symbols to convey answers to you. Developing your intuitive gifts often enables you to recognize these messages.

If you’d like to further develop your gifts, consider attending our upcoming psychic mediumship development workshop in July! If a workshop isn’t for you, but you’d like to speak to a psychic, come to our monthly group readings!

Why understanding blending factors is important for aromatherapy

If you’ve ever tried to mix a few of your essential oils together to create a blend, then you know how important it is to understand how much of each product you should use.

learn blending with Jill Griffin

Early on in my essential oil exploration I would get so excited about creating a blend.

I would purchase my apothecary amber glass bottle to create my mixture and then I would carefully fill the bottle with jojoba carrier oil. I would then guess on how many drops of my favorite essential oils to use. The result was either so strong I felt like If I applied the mix I was going to stink up the room, or so light that I continued to pour more drops into my creation using most of the essential oil bottle. Since I was also interested in the therapeutic benefit and not just the scent, I wondered if I was wasting the essential oil or causing a safety concern.

When I began by aromatherapy studies, I gained an understanding of the Aromatic Strength of an essential oil.

I learned the concept of top, middle, and bottom notes and how the scent may change over time due to air exposure. Many experts talk about Blending Weights or Blending Factors and how to use this concept as you begin to create your aromatic products for both therapeutic benefits and aroma. It requires simple math but the end result is worth it.

For the beginner it can be as simple as selecting 2-3 essential oils and sniff each one individually with your nose.

Which smells the most potent? Which has the lightest scent? How many drops do you want to use of your essential oils? Where on your body do you plan on using the blend? How big is the bottle you are putting the product in? What therapeutic benefit are you seeking? These questions help us figure out how much to use based on the intended purpose.

Here’s a recipe I created that showcases the importance of Blending Factor.

This recipe takes into consideration the top, middle, and base note and the therapeutic benefits of the essential oils. In this recipe I formulated for relaxation and sleep.

Sleep Body Oil Recipe:

Equipment

  • Medium size glass Pyrex Cup
  • Metal spoon or glass stirring rod
  • 1-ounce glass dropper bottle
  • Small Pipette or funnel for ease of transferring body oil into glass dropper bottle

Ingredients

  • Carrier oil:  about .80 of an of Jojoba carrier oil (about 1.5 Tablespoons)
  • Essential oils:
    • Vetiver (base note)4 drops
    • Lavender (mid-note) 6 drops
    • Orange (top-note) 8 drops

Instructions:

  • Mix all the ingredients together well with a spoon.
  • Pour into a sterile dropper bottle/s, if properly stored this body oil will last up to 6 months or longer.
  • Make sure to write date and ingredients on a label to attach to dropper bottle.
  • Gently massage in with clean fingertips on neck, arms, stomach or chest. Avoid mouth, eyes, and open wounds.
  • Recommended for nighttime use only. Do not use in the daytime if you have used orange essential oil.

If you are interested in learning more about blending, I am teaching an upcoming class on Introduction to Blending with Essential Oils Saturday, June 22 from 2pm to 4pm at the Amityville Apothecary. Manifesting Abundance

We’re always manifesting. Even manifesting abundance!

This is important- so let me repeat it- WE ARE ALWAYS MANIFESTING.

Every single thing you have in your life right now- whether good or bad- you manifested it. Some of you- I can hear it already- are all like, “no way, I did not manifest this ish.” But, ya did, and the first step is admitting your role and responsibility before you can take steps to change it.

Stop right now and take responsibility.. right this second.. that way you can manifest what you really want in your life.

Because you can’t bring in anything new if there is no room for it.

Why am I getting all up in your business about this? Because it is May- the month for manifestation. And no one manifests better than our Taurus brothers and sisters.

Everything is energy- Even Money!

To call abundance into our lives it’s as simple as matching the energetic frequency of abundance- and that is high vibe baby! Good news is that getting into the vibrational frequency that matches abundance is an easy practice. Steps can be added each day to enhance our own vibration. And the good news is, we can take a teeny step a day so we don’t fall in the overwhelm trap.

Simple Steps for Raising Vibration and Manifestation.

The first step is get grateful. Seriously. The more grateful we are for what we currently have in our lives, the easier abundance will flow to us with grace and ease. Think about this: you want to do favors for the people that are thankful, right? I know the people that take me for granted leave me feeling like I don’t want to help them out anymore. Sound familiar? Be grateful for what you have, even if it is as simple as a hot morning cup of coffee. Once you get into the attitude of gratitude, watch how easy you can manifest.

Get into the Vortex!

I absolutely love the Abraham Hicks morning rampage meditation. It’s an amazing way to set intention and frequency for your day! The Universe wants us to be successful and abundant but we need to co-create, not just wait! Try this meditation and let us know what you think about it!

Make Room!

Remember what I said before? You can’t bring in anything new if there is no room for it. Go ahead and Marie Kondo your closet, cancel those subscriptions, reevaluate your relationships. What are you holding onto tightly? Where are you restricting flow and ease because it is what you know? Pay attention to those areas, journal about it, dig deep.

Then… set intentions

Once you make room, or identify where you can make room, set a list of those items, people, and circumstances you want to call into your life. Once you set that list, make an action plan of simple steps you can take to stay high vibe and lay the groundwork for calling your intentions to you.

Need help?

Need a little help working through the process? We’d love to help you! Contact us to talk more about how we can help!

How to Smudge your Space.

how to smudge your space with sage
smudging 101

Let’s face it, everyone wants less negativity and lower vibrational energy in their lives. One of the easiest, most inexpensive, and effective ways to kick negativity to the curb is through smudging. Let’s talk How To Smudge!

So, what’s smudging?

By definition, it’s a ceremony practiced by burning sacred herbs for spiritual cleansing purposes. Smudging is practiced by Indigenous peoples of the Americas (North and South), but the tradition of burning herbs and resins in ceremony has a broad, spiritual base.

White Sage, Mugwort, Bay Leaves, Blue Spruce, Palo Santo and frankincense are herbs and resins that are used during ceremony to cleanse and purify space.

At Amityville Apothecary, we sell quite a bit of White Sage (salvia apiana) and Palo Santo. Clients instinctually understand they can turn to Sage and Palo Santo to purify space, but aren’t quite sure how to accomplish it.

Here’s a simple Smudging ceremony to make a part of your spiritual practice.

First, light your sage or palo santo. At the Apothecary, we like to use White Sage to clear negativity and Palo Santo to bring in good vibrations.

Remember, always be safe and respect fire.

Prepare a fire safe bowl or dish to tamper your Sage and Palo Santo in. Abalone shell is the traditional smudge bowl because it represents water (we’re a little obsessed with having all four elements represented during our smudge ritual).

Light the end of your sage or palo santo until you see a red ember. Fan the ember with a feather, smudge fan, or even your hand, in order to feed the ember with oxygen.

Now it’s time to allow the smoke to do its work.

Visualize the smoke absorbing all negative energies and energies that no longer serve and lifting them out of your space. Perhaps try the following prayer:

I ask any and all energies that do not serve the highest of love and the greatest of good for those that live and enter this home to disperse. So it is. Thank you, thank you, thank you. For other prayer ideas, please visit this awesome article at the-numinous.com

Once you visualize the lower energies attaching to the smoke and say your prayer, open your windows and doors and allow the smoke to leave your home.

It’s amazing how different your home will feel after smudging. Feel free to contact us to learn more about the smudge sticks and accessories we carry. We’d love to guide you during this very important ritual.
