Cleansing and Clearing Crystals

So.. what’s all the fuss about cleansing and clearing crystals? How to cleanse and clear crystals is one of the many topics we get asked over and over at the Apothecary.

Moonlight? Sunlight? Sage? How do you pick?

Perform a quick Google search and you’ll find hundreds of articles that prescribe any one of the following ways to cleanse your crystals:

  • running them under water or placing them in a stream, ocean, or brook
  • using the smoke of sage
  • using your breath or voice to send cleansing intention through the crystal
  • placing them in sunlight
  • placing them in moonlight (preferably during a full moon)
  • putting them in a dish of salt
  • burying them in the Earth
  • placing them on a slab of Selenite (another crystal)

These articles recommend cleansing and clearing crystals monthly, or at least every time we set a new intention.

But, do we really need to worry about cleansing and clearing crystals?

Now, I’m not going to say this is a load of baloney… after all, these are very traditional methods of “cleansing”. I am going to say I think we project our very uniquely human character traits onto crystals.

I think humans are drawn to working with crystals because they are ordered and constant.

The very reason why humans are drawn to crystals in the first place is due to their very exact cell-unit structure. Due to this structure, crystals are able to entrain chaotic energy, making it more stable.

Humans are just about the most energetically chaotic beings out there; especially now in the 21st century. We get thrown off by weather, other’s emotions, music, food, work… really anything! But crystals do not.

It’s our very propensity for falling out of energetic balance that makes us project the same onto our crystal allies.

Crystals are not human! And while they do have consciousness, knowledge, and ability to affect our energy… they do not need the same level of energetic hygiene humans need.

Now, if practicing a monthly full-moon ritual of cleansing and charging your crystals brings you comfort- keep at it!

Ritual is such an important part of any spiritual practice.

But, if the monthly cycle is bringing you stress, stop! After all we’re trying to limit the emotional swings of being a human being… not add to them, right?

People are surprised to learn we really don’t feel the need to cleanse and charge our crystals that often. There are a couple of exceptions (Jet comes to mind- it’s very absorptive of energy and pain).

However, if we had to pick just one way of cleansing and clearing crystals, we’d pick sound. Why? Well.. everything is made of sound (a topic of another blog for sure) so crystals respond very well and come back quickly into alignment of its natural state when placed under the tone of a tuning fork or Tibetan bowl.

Remember, crystals- by their very molecular structure- are ordered. They really don’t require constant maintenance like we think they do.

How to Smudge your Space.

how to smudge your space with sage
smudging 101

Let’s face it, everyone wants less negativity and lower vibrational energy in their lives. One of the easiest, most inexpensive, and effective ways to kick negativity to the curb is through smudging. Let’s talk How To Smudge!

So, what’s smudging?

By definition, it’s a ceremony practiced by burning sacred herbs for spiritual cleansing purposes. Smudging is practiced by Indigenous peoples of the Americas (North and South), but the tradition of burning herbs and resins in ceremony has a broad, spiritual base.

White Sage, Mugwort, Bay Leaves, Blue Spruce, Palo Santo and frankincense are herbs and resins that are used during ceremony to cleanse and purify space.

At Amityville Apothecary, we sell quite a bit of White Sage (salvia apiana) and Palo Santo. Clients instinctually understand they can turn to Sage and Palo Santo to purify space, but aren’t quite sure how to accomplish it.

Here’s a simple Smudging ceremony to make a part of your spiritual practice.

First, light your sage or palo santo. At the Apothecary, we like to use White Sage to clear negativity and Palo Santo to bring in good vibrations.

Remember, always be safe and respect fire.

Prepare a fire safe bowl or dish to tamper your Sage and Palo Santo in. Abalone shell is the traditional smudge bowl because it represents water (we’re a little obsessed with having all four elements represented during our smudge ritual).

Light the end of your sage or palo santo until you see a red ember. Fan the ember with a feather, smudge fan, or even your hand, in order to feed the ember with oxygen.

Now it’s time to allow the smoke to do its work.

Visualize the smoke absorbing all negative energies and energies that no longer serve and lifting them out of your space. Perhaps try the following prayer:

I ask any and all energies that do not serve the highest of love and the greatest of good for those that live and enter this home to disperse. So it is. Thank you, thank you, thank you. For other prayer ideas, please visit this awesome article at the-numinous.com

Once you visualize the lower energies attaching to the smoke and say your prayer, open your windows and doors and allow the smoke to leave your home.

It’s amazing how different your home will feel after smudging. Feel free to contact us to learn more about the smudge sticks and accessories we carry. We’d love to guide you during this very important ritual.
